HTC Blockchain

Smartphone giant, HTC is making an Android phone that will be powered by blockchain technology.

Led by the creator of HTC's 'Vive' VR headset, Phil Chen, the phones will feature a universal wallet (putting HTC in direct competition with some big players in the world of cryptocurrencies – we're looking at you Ethos, Enjin, Robinhood, et al.) and built-in hardware that will support cryptocurrencies and decentralised applications.

Chen said:

“Through Exodus, we are excited to be supporting underlying protocols such as Bitcoin, Lightning Networks, Ethereum, Dfinity, and more. We would like to support the entire blockchain ecosystem, and in the next few months we’ll be announcing many more exciting partnerships together.”

"We think that the phone can be an agent in the future for decentralisation. We want you to hold your own key [through] a secure management method in our phones,"

It's exciting to see a company the size of HTC embrace blockchain and cryptocurrencies to this extent. This news could be the catalyst for an increase in adoption of cryptocurrencies worldwide as it becomes a lot easier for HTC Android smartphone owners to interact with and, crucially, learn more about crypto.

While HTC is one of the first companies to come forward and announce their adoption of blockchain tech, we suspect they won't be the last this year. 2018 has been, on more than one occasion, touted as 'the year of the blockchain'.

HTC did not announce the price or the release date for Exodus.

What do you think of the news? Do you think HTC is being legitimate here, or is it just a big PR stunt to boost the value of the company? As ever, please leave your thoughts below.
